Let's write this down...

*Jeremy and I never really said much to each other...he made my drink quickly...and was always polite...
*I was sleep deprived and half awake on most mornings...but one day I woke up and realized that he had something...a certain I don't know what/I don't know what/I'm not going to say it in French...
*I told my husband that someone should cast him in a film...or I would if I was making one...
*I started hearing more curious bits about him...loves the opera...plays the cello...bakes bread...
*So...one morning, I broke the regular, "I'll take a big guatemala and a flat white", (that's 7am kate/coffee/language) routine and asked if I could interview him...or if he had been photographed...I don't know...7am pre-coffee it's all hazy...
*He said, "sure"...and now I know more...but not much...he's a tricky one.
*Here are the first 3 answers (questions not necessary)...more photos and answers coming tomorrow...and the next day...meet Jeremy Gauger...

Nine Questions with Kate...

*My lovely sister Kelly came to visit NYC while I was finishing up the mural at CDS. She hung out with me and asked some questionssss...

1. Favorite part of the piece?
there are lots of little bits that I like…
the words..."woke up ate pancakes drank oj”
the blue waves and text “the sidewalk was like a wave and we rode it”
the cloud-esque/thought bubble pattern
the blue stick-like things that have blocks of color inside…

2. Soundtrack
- Dr. Dre
-Liz Phair
- The Virgins
- Jay Z
- The Police
- The Strokes
- Ben Kweller
I had an old set of speakers that only took my old ipod…so it was a bit random but it worked :)

3. Inspiration for the piece?
I kept a sketchbook of images from the school/city…things that the kids could relate to or saw on a daily basis…I was planning on drawing frames and putting things from their world in the frames BUT all of that changed once I started hanging out in the space.
I showed up to work the first night and after sitting for almost an hour, I realized that my idea about “framing” the world of the kids was not going to work. The school/stairwell had so much energy and I could feel the spirit of the kids…so I just started to work off of what I was feeling. The piece became more about energy/transitions/conversations/play…I just followed the energy.

4. When did you have time to do this piece?
I started August 6th and finished up on September 11th…I worked nights during the week (I’m home with the kids during the day) and all day/night during the weekends. Tom took over with the kids in the evening and on the weekends. It was a huge team effort and Tom was incredibly supportive and made it very easy for me to do what I needed to do!

5. Where do the designs and patterns come from?
A lot of the patterns in this piece are new…they were inspired by the space/energy/music.  There are also quite a few designs/icons that I’ve drawn for years that are inspired by patterns from the beach, the backs of old skateboards, graffiti, flowers, totem poles, bows/arrows…you name it.

6. What story does this piece tell?
Hopefully everyone will create their own story or experience something different from the piece…For me, it tells the story of a girl having fun for a month and not taking anything too seriously….just playing and responding to energy…

7. What were your neighborhood go-to meals during the project?
Chicken rice bowl from Kyo Chon
Dumplings from Mandoo Bar
Poached eggs with cilantro and lentils from The Breslin

8. How have you changed through this project?
I’ve gained confidence about tackling massive/twisting spaces…

9. What is it about drawing on walls?
I love the physicality of working on large walls/spaces….creeping up to the top corners…stretching on my stomach/side to add details to the very bottom. The hard surface is a treat too....and the ways paint moves perfectly or not so perfectly….
